FAQs

About Campbell Irvine

Who are Campbell Irvine?

L
K

We're an independent insurance broker based in Kensington, London. We've been arranging insurance for private clients and businesses since 1973, and we're still independently owned.

Are you regulated?

L
K

Yes. Campbell Irvine (Insurance Brokers) Limited is authorised and regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA), firm reference number 301452. You can check our entry on the FCA Register.

What does "independent" mean for me?

L
K

We aren't owned by an insurer and we don't work for one. Our job is to find the right cover for you across the insurers we deal with, and to act on your behalf if you ever need to claim.

Will I deal with the same person each time?

L
K

Yes. When you contact us, you're introduced to a named broker, and that's who you deal with from quote through to renewal, and when you first report a claim. If your designated broker is not available or on holiday, you will speak to another broker who is familiar with your case. No switchboard, no call centre.

Can I visit you?

L
K

Of course. We're at 52 Earls Court Road, London W8 6EJ, Monday to Friday, 9am to 5.00pm. It's worth calling ahead so the right person is free to see you.

Using a broker

L
K

Why use a broker instead of going direct or using a comparison site? Comparison sites are built to sell a price. We're here to make sure you're properly covered. We ask the questions a website won't, explain what's covered and what isn't, and deal with the insurer for you when something goes wrong.

Does using a broker cost more?

L
K

Not necessarily. We have access to insurers and specialist markets that do not sell directly to businesses or consumers and we can often negotiate terms from a stronger position than an individual client could.

Sometimes the right cover doesn’t mean getting cheapest cover; sometimes it can costs less. Either way, you'll know what you're paying for.

How are you paid?

L
K

We're usually paid a commission by the insurer, included within your premium. We also charge a broking fee which is payable on acceptance. We'll always tell you about any fee before you buy and you can ask us at any time how much we earn from your policy.

Which insurers do you use?

L

We work with a wide range of UK insurers, Lloyd's syndicates and specialist underwriters. The right one depends on your circumstances, and we'll tell you which insurer we recommend and why.

What We Cover

What types of insurance do you arrange?

L
K

Our work falls into three areas: personal insurance (household and high net worth), commercial insurance (office and business, property owners, and professional risks), and specialist cover for tour operators and travel agents. If you need something outside these, ask us. If we can't place it, we'll tell you who can.

What is high net worth insurance, and do I need it?

L
K

It's home and contents cover designed for higher-value properties and possessions such as fine art, jewellery, watches and collections. It typically offers higher limits, broader cover and a more hands-on claims service than a standard home policy. If your home is larger or listed, or your possessions are worth more than a standard policy's single-item limits, it's worth a conversation.

My business is small. Is it worth using a broker?

L
K

Yes. Smaller firms are often the most exposed to gaps in off-the-shelf policies. We look at your premises, equipment, liabilities and how your team works, then arrange cover around that.

Do you insure landlords and property portfolios?

L
K

Yes. We arrange property owners cover for single lets through to larger residential and commercial portfolios, including block policies.

Why use a specialist for tour operator and travel agent insurance?

L
K

Travel businesses carry risks a standard commercial policy isn't built for, so a product that will cover specific responsibilities that you may be liable for under The Package Travel Regulations. We have access to the limited number of insurance markets that offer such cover. It's an area we've specialised in for years, so we understand the sector before the conversation starts.

Quotes, Renewals and Switching

How do I get a quote?

L
K

Call us on 020 7937 6981 or email us. There's no online form: a short conversation lets us understand what you need and avoid assumptions that cause problems later.

What information will you need?

L
K

It depends on the cover, but typically details of the property or business, what you want insured and its value, your current policy schedule if you have one, and your claims history for the last five years.

How long does a quote take?

L
K

Straightforward personal and small business quotes can often be turned around within a few working days. Higher-value or specialist risks take longer because we approach insurers individually. We'll give you a realistic timescale at the outset.

My policy isn't due for renewal yet. Can I still talk to you?

L
K

Yes, and it's better to. Get in touch four to six weeks before your renewal date so we have time to review your cover properly. You can also switch mid-term, though your current insurer may apply a cancellation charge, so we'll check that first.

What happens at renewal?

L
K

We review your cover before it's due, check the market where it makes sense, and send you our renewal terms and recommendations in good time. Your policy won't simply roll over without us talking to you.

Claims

What should I do if I need to make a claim?

L
K

Contact your broker as soon as reasonably possible. Take reasonable steps to prevent further loss or damage, keep photos and receipts and don't admit liability to anyone. We'll tell you what the insurer needs and handle the notification for you.

Will you help me with the claim?

L
K

Yes. We'll report the claim to your insurer and get the claim set up for you. From there, the insurer's claims handler or appointed loss aduster becomes your main point of contact and manages the claim through to settlement. We make sure we are kept up to date with the correspondence throughout. If the claim isn't progressing as it should, or you'd like us to get involved, we'll step in on your behalf.

What if something happens out of hours?

L
K

Call the emergency helpline on your policy documents for urgent help, such as a burst pipe or break-in. Then let us know on the next working day so we can take it from there.

What if I disagree with the insurer's decision?

L
K

Tell us. We'll review the decision against your policy wording and challenge it with the insurer where we think it's wrong.

Complaints, Privacy and Protection

How do I make a complaint?

L
K

We hope you'll never need to, but if you're unhappy, you can contact us by phone, email or letter and we'll acknowledge it promptly. We'll aim to resolve it quickly and will send a final response within eight weeks. If you're not satisfied with our response, you may be able to refer your complaint to the Financial Ombudsman Service.

Are you covered by the Financial Services Compensation Scheme?

L
K

Yes. We're covered by the FSCS. You may be entitled to compensation if we cannot meet our obligations. This depends on the type of business and the circumstances of the claim.

What if I'm struggling to pay my premium?

L
K

Please talk to us early. We can look at options such as adjusting your cover or paying in instalments, and we'll treat you fairly.

How do you use my personal information?

L
K

We use your information only to arrange and manage your insurance and handle claims, in line with UK data protection law. Our Privacy Policy explains what we collect, who we share it with (such as insurers) and your rights.
